A 33-year-old Whitby male is facing several charges after fleeing police during a routine traffic stop Saturday.
On Saturday, June 18, 2016, at approximately 7:10 a.m., an officer in Whitby observed a vehicle with an altered validation sticker in the area of Dundas and Garden Streets. The driver pulled into a nearby gas station, where the officer approached his vehicle and knocked on the window.
The driver quickly pulled out of the gas station and continued west on Dundas Street, fleeing the area. The officer located the vehicle near Hickory and Reynolds Streets and the driver proceeded to accelerate away when he saw the cruiser. The suspect vehicle then hit a curb in the area of Hickory Street and Regency Crescent, causing serious damage to the front wheel. Following a brief struggle with police, the male was arrested and charged.
Austin BALCOM, age 33, of Whitby is charged with: Fail to Stop/Pursuit; Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle; Driving Under Suspension; Drive Motor Vehicle No Validation on Plate; Operate Motor Vehicle No Insurance and Deface/Alter Number Plate. He was later released on a Promise to Appear OIC Undertaking.
