Rooming House Debate at Council  February 22, 2012

City councillors got an earful last night when it came to tightening up rooming house regulations.
But as Melody Belfry reports, landlords who rent to students are now being lumped into the lodging house category.... a possibility that has many fearful that student rentals in Peterborough could soon become a thing of the past.

I was greatly disturbed by the fact that Chex news only played the part of the interview they did with me that talked about the issues of noisy tenants. In my interview I believe the most important issue was not around "licensed rooming houses" or for that matter noisy tenants. I believe as a concerned citizen the problem lays mostly at the feet of the city council. Peterborough's council has been asleep for the past 20 yrs and its about time they woke up. We need more social workers, more mental health workers, more safe places for people suffering from drug addictions and more affordable housing. If the city bends to the demands of the neighbors who are complaining about these issues ( I do sympathize with them and realize they have real concerns) and do not address the many social concerns, we will have hundreds of people who will be out on the streets and nowhere to go. If, as a result of this the type of coverage, we want to be seen as a uncaring city then the city council can continue to be asleep and continue only to cater to "those people" who have a voice and then we can have all those without a voice on the streets of our city. I found it ironic that it seemed the council was sympathetic to the landlords who had students in their building, I wonder could that be because students bring  money into the city. I almost feel this is a witchhunt to rid the city of ........poor people.
