Early Morning Fire Destroys Oshawa House

Durham, ON, Canada / channel12

Three people are homeless after the home they rented in Oshawa went up in flames early Friday morning.  With more, here’s Joe Scarpelli.

Cell phone video was shot moments after a home on Nassau Street in Oshawa went up in flames around 2:30 this morning.  Neighbours are still trying to digest what took place.

Rob Lambert “I think I’m still trying to actually take it in.”

Larry Ferguson “This street was just a madhouse.”

Fire officials say the three occupants and a dog made it out safely.  It’s not yet known if working smoke alarms were behind the occupants’ quick and safe escape.

But for Christine Barlow who lives across the street, her dog Remington was her smoke alarm.

“I was yelling at him ‘why are you barking?’ and I looked out and went ‘oh.’  So now I’m happy he smelled fire so he’ll wake us up next time.”

Damage is estimated to be around 300,000 dollars.  An investigator from the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office was on scene Friday, trying to determine the cause.  Fire officials are not sure where the occupants of the home will be staying this long weekend but did say the Red Cross is helping.
