An investigation into storefront medical marihuana dispensaries in Durham Region led to charges today.
An investigation into the storefront operations began in June 2016 after concerns were raised by citizens and nearby businesses. As part of the investigation, it was determined the storefront marihuana dispensaries were not licensed producers and were operating outside of the regulations. The marihuana dispensaries were served with letters on August 29, 2016 warning the DRPS may take enforcement action if they did not shut down, and they refused.
On Friday, September 16, 2016 members of the DRPS Drug Enforcement Unit, with the assistance of officers from Central East and Central West Division, executed search warrants at two storefront dispensaries in Oshawa and one in Whitby:
• Emerald Triangle, 8 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa
• 420 Compassion Club, 136 Simcoe St. S., Oshawa
• Green Street Medical Society, 110 Dunlop St. E., Whitby
A total of four people were charged with possession of marihuana for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds obtained by crime. Everyone was released on Appearance Notices.
