A 29-year-old male from Markham was arrested after he rushed towards a prisoner in an Oshawa courtroom.
On Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at approximately 2:20 p.m., DRPS Special Constables were in a courtroom at the Durham Region Courthouse on Bond Street East where they were providing security during a sentencing hearing. A male suspect, who had been seated in the public gallery, leapt over the partition wall and advanced on the person being sentenced. The suspect damaged the protective glass that surrounded the prisoner and was tackled by the Special Constables. One of the Special Constables was assaulted as he, and other officers in the courtroom, tried to restrain the suspect.
The Special Constable suffered minor injuries that didn’t require immediate medical attention.
Garrett NAYLOR, age 29, of Walden Street in Markham, is charged with: Assault and Mischief Under $5,000. He was later released on an Undertaking with conditions.
