Toronto Male Arrested After Distraction Theft in Ajax

A 65-year-old Toronto male is facing charges after a distraction theft took place outside a grocery store in Ajax.

On Wednesday, July 6, 2016, just before 3 p.m., a witness reported seeing a male slash the tires of an SUV in the parking lot of the No Frills at Bayly Street and Monarch Avenue in Ajax. Officers met with the owner of the SUV who indicated she came to the grocery store after withdrawing some cash from a bank at Harwood Avenue and Kingston Road.

She did some groceries and left in her vehicle before realizing she had a flat tire. She returned to the parking lot where a male asked her if she needed help. She declined and the male left in a nearby vehicle. She later noticed her purse with a quantity of cash and personal items was missing from the passenger’s seat. The woman was not physically harmed during the incident.

Officers were able to locate a suspect thorough a licence plate and surveillance video and he was arrested on Friday July 8, 2016. The identity of his accomplice is not known.

Luis RIQUELME, age 65, of  Toronto, is charged with Mischief Under $5,000; Theft Under $5,000 and Obstruct Police. He was released on an OIC Promise to Appear.
