Maple Leafs select Matthews with first overall pick at NHL draft

Durham, ON, Canada / channel12

The Toronto Maple Leafs have selected American centre Auston Matthews first overall in the NHL draft.
It was the first time the Leafs have had the first overall pick since taking Wendel Clark in 1985.
Matthews will be the most significant piece of a major rebuild project in Toronto.
The 18-year-old spent his draft year playing pro in Switzlerand where he collected 24 goals and 46 points in 36 games for Zurich SC.
The Leafs finished last in the NHL this season with a 29-42-11 record.
A poor showing during the regular season made for a Canadian logjam atop the draft with teams north of the border holding five of the first six picks and seven of the top 12.
