A 47-year-old male was arrested after stealing an acquaintance’s cashbox and then swinging a knife at those who tried to stop him.
On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at approximately 1:45 p.m., officers from Central East Division responded to the area of Glen Street and Malaga Road in Oshawa for a theft that had just occurred. The victim, a 64-year-old woman, permitted the suspect to enter her apartment as she had met him before. Once inside, the suspect grabbed a cashbox and fled. A female witness, who was visiting the victim, began to yell and chase the suspect. A neighbour heard the commotion and joined the chase, eventually catching the suspect and holding him down outside the building, until the suspect swung an Exacto knife at him. The neighbour’s hand was cut and the suspect made good his escape.
Officers located the suspect hiding in a shed behind his residence. Members of the DRPS Tactical Support Unit arrested him without further incident. A box cutter knife was recovered.
Michael WHYTE, age 47, of Oshawa, is charged with: Theft Under $5,000; Assault with a Weapon; Possession of Stolen Property; and Possession of Weapons Dangerous. He was held for a bail hearing.
