Ontario municipalities allowed to use ranked ballots in 2018

Durham, ON, Canada / channel12

Ontario municipalities will have the option of using ranked ballots in the next municipal elections in 2018, after the legislation passed today.
The preferential ballots allow voters to rank candidates instead of voting for a single person.
The government says that kind of voting means a winning candidate would have a higher percentage of the vote and a broader mandate.
The legislation also bans corporate and union donations to council candidates and would-be school board trustees in all 445 Ontario municipalities.
