DRPS Investigate Fake Posters Falsely Accusing Man

Police are trying to identify the person responsible for numerous posters placed across Oshawa and Whitby falsely accusing a male of being a sex offender.

On Monday, March 14, 2016, officers in Central East Division received a report of harassment from a male victim who works in Oshawa. Posters with the victim’s image and the official logo of the DRPS and CityNews were posted at a business on Dundas Street East in Whitby and at the Campus Ice Centre in north Oshawa. The poster also named the victim and falsely stated that he had been charged with possession of child pornography and child luring.

A letter containing a copy of the poster and a threatening message was delivered to the victim’s place of work.

Investigators are appealing for information regarding this investigation.

Anyone with new information is asked to contact Det. McCurbin of the Central East Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2764.
