Winter Makes An Unwanted Return To Durham

A winter weather system moved through parts of southern Ontario overnight and became a nuisance for motorists and for residents who were hoping summer was just around the corner.

Durham Region residents woke up to a winter wonderland as the snow continued to fall into the early morning hours on Monday.

“I think what made this particular stretch of cold weather all the more noticeable for a lot of people was just how mild the winter was leading up to it,”

The system made for slippery driving conditions with hundreds of reported fender benders.

“From when the snow started falling yesterday afternoon we have investigated and called to approximately 700 collisions already.”

While many residents were shocked by the dip in temperature it isn’t unusual for old man winter to have one last hurrah before summer rolls in.

“April 2003, the month was like what we are experiencing now where our daytime highs are struggling to get into the single digits and it wasn’t really until the middle part of the month where things started to warm up.”

Over the last few weeks the temperatures have fluctuated from minus -1 to plus 11 degrees Celsius.  The temperature change led some residents to believe winter was over, promoting them to remove their winter tires off and stow away their winter jackets. However Environment Canada is warning that you will need both a little while longer.

“Unfortunately we are going to be keeping an eye on another system that is going to be coming out of the Prairie Provinces on Wednesday that is likely going to spread some snow into the area in time for the morning commute.”
