Winter Blast Leaves Thousands Without Power

Durham, ON, Canada / channel12

A broad band of freezing rain is working its way across southern Ontario, and the ice buildup on wires and branches has already cut power to more than 30-thousand hydro customers west and north of Toronto.
PowerStream said some 23-thousand customers were without power in the Vaughan. Woodbridge and Kleinburg areas.

Ontario Hydro said more than 10-thousand customers were blacked out in the Fergus, Listowel and Cambridge areas.

Environment Canada has said between five and 20 millimetres of ice accumulations were possible before the freezing rain changed to rain by this afternoon as temperatures slowly rise toward zero.

The agency said eastern Ontario was expected to receive “significant freezing” to begin this afternoon.
